Whitby hosting huge seafood celebration

BUSINESS are being urged to get involved with plans for a huge seafood festival in Whitby at the end of August.
Organisers of the Coastal Flavours of Whitby event hope hoteliers, restauranteurs, cafe owners and other traders will support the event.

The festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday 29 and 30 August and will feature a host of events, activities and demonstrations aimed at showcasing Whitby’s fishing industry, the produce it lands, as well as our regional food producers.

Irene Myers, one of the organisers, said she wanted as many businesses as possible to get involved.

“We want local businesses to feel involved in the weekend itself.

“We’d love to see cafes, restaurants and guest houses doing their own special Coastal Flavours of Whitby dish to put on their menus for the weekend,” she said.

“This event is also about the town itself and we want to make sure local people are involved as much as possible.”

Anyone who wants to get involved can just highlight their support of the event on their menus or blackboards, or for more information contact Irene on (01642) 312226.

It is being funded by the Yorkshire and Humber Seafood Group.

Endeavour Wharf will be transformed and will play host to a food hall, food theatre and an array of entertainment for all the family.

Dozens of specialist food producers from across the Yorkshire region will showcase their high quality and varied produce in the designated food hall.

Celebrity chef, Ed Baines will be taking centre stage in the food theatre.

He is currently one of the judges of ITV1’s hugely successful Britain’s Best Dish, now in its third series.

Ed has also recently filmed Taste the Nation for ITV1 and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is for BBC2.

Earlier this year, he released his second book, Best of British.

He will be cooking up a treat in the deliciouslyorkshire Food Theatre.

Ed said: “I’m delighted to have been invited to take part in Coastal Flavours of Whitby.

“The area has so much to savour in terms of its rich diversity in food and the fishing industry..”

He will also be a judge for this year’s Whitby Gazette Chip Shop Challenge.

Also on the celebrity chef line-up is National Seafood Chef of the Year 2009, Rob Green, chef/owner of Green’s Restaurant, Whitby, as well as the inspirational Tutors from Bettys Cookery School.

Carl James, Project Manager for Yorkshire and Humber Seafood Group, said: “The Yorkshire and Humber Seafood Group are delighted to be hosting this fantastic event for Whitby, which can boast a fishing industry that has grown from strength to strength over the years.

“It was our aim to design a great fun, family event that is a fitting celebration of the terrific seafood that is landed in Whitby and on the surrounding coastline.

“With support from local businesses, tourist attractions, restaurants and cafes, the event is already being acknowledged as a long awaited recognition for Whitby and its fishing industry
